Chronology of cameras Formosa Plastics Corporation
Roniflex is a French trademark registered in 1991 by the company MOVITEX. Originally, it was a hosiery company founded in 1947 by MOrand and VIciot, TEXtiles de l'Ain. In 2023, the company still exists and is located in Villeneuve d'Ascq. It has specialized in selling clothing for seniors and owns the Daxon brand. The company was part of the La Redoute group for several years before leaving in 2015. The camera dates back to the period of belonging to the group.
__________A cult classic of the "so bad it's good" category! This Roniflex is commonly found at flea markets, where it is usually brand new (one wonders why), in its white cardboard packaging adorned with its photo, accompanied by a sun visor that probably doesn't protect much. The camera gives itself the appearance of a reflex with its ergonomic handle (if you knew how much I laugh writing this nonsense), its cover that doesn't protect a prism but a viewfinder, and so on.
The lens is a plastic meniscus located at the bottom of a fake lens (edged in red, Canon style). The lens is labeled as New Optical Lens. If this is the "new," I'd like to see the "old." The lens is the avatar of a large series ("Series"). There are still four apertures (maximum f/5.6) manipulated through weather-related pictograms.
There is an accessory shoe with a flash contact (hot shoe). But it has all the features of a high-end camera! You'll be pleased to learn that this camera has successfully passed a quality test, as indicated by the golden sticker.
When you pick it up, you'll find it surprisingly heavy despite the use of the most modern and lightweight materials. Inside, there is a huge piece of lead... to add a touch of seriousness.
This one was a gift from Daxon.
The cameras manufactured by Formosa Plastics Corporation are recognizable by the adhesive label marked "FPC Quality Passed." The problem is that this label easily peels off. The markings on the lens cannot help with identification because the same ones are found on cameras manufactured by Ouyama, suggesting that the lens is a common subcontract among several manufacturers in Taiwan. These markings are fanciful, using a fictitious serial number. They sometimes suggest functions that do not exist. For example, "Auto Fix focus" simply means there is no focus adjustment; it is a fixed focus. The word "Auto" is there to deceive.
One can attempt to determine main types among this production. It is noticed that the differences between two types are sometimes minimal. Dating is very difficult, although there is an evolution in shapes to follow the design of major brands.
To add to the confusion, the cameras bear various commercial trademarks, which are mostly hollow shells. The same model name can be used for different devices (e.g., Licom MXF-700). Some models bear well-known brands because they have been used for advertising purposes (e.g., Time). Other names, such as Nikanon, are only there for their resemblance to major brands like Nikon and Canon.
